A
changing table puts your diapering supplies at an easy-to-reach height so you can keep one hand on baby while you grab wipes, rash cream and more. They're great for keeping everything in one place and making clean up easier — plus they prevent you from bending over your newborn for too long, which can lead to back strain.
You can find stand-alone changing tables that just have the pads, or you can opt for a dresser/changing table set that includes a drawer or several shelves to store clothing and supplies. Some of these are available in a variety of finishes to complement your nursery decor and other furniture. Many also feature an activity station that includes a mobile or other type of baby toy to keep your little one entertained during changes.
As babies grow, they become more independent and may object to being changed on the changing table by trying to roll away or kick off the pad. That's when you'll need to decide whether the added convenience of a changing table is worth it or if it's time to switch to using a pad on the floor.
It's also important to note that your child's weight and height play a role in when you should stop using the changing table. Most of these have a maximum weight capacity, and it's safest to stop using the table once your baby reaches this limit, which is usually around age 2 or 30 pounds.
